Nearly 15 years later, we still apparently do not understand the root causes of the 9/11 attacks. Here's an example of why:
US Democratic presidential candidate and Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders on Sunday said that America has to get to the "root cause" of the September 11, 2001 terror attacks, explaining that unanswered questions concerning Saudi Arabia need to be addressed.
During an interview on NBC's "Meet the Press," Sanders voiced his support for Senate legislation that would allow victims of terror attacks to sue foreign governments in federal court.

We're not going to find the root causes of 9/11 in lawsuits against Iran, Saudi Arabia, or anyone else ... no matter what their involvement.
We were given some damn good clues to those root causes immediately after the attacks (on 9/12/2001) by former Professor Ward Churchill. If you want to know why we were attacked, I suggest you read his essay "'Some People Push Back': On the Justice of Roosting Chickens":

But if the real reason you want to pick the scab off this old wound is to gouge a lot of money out of some Muslims, then don't bother to read anything by Churchill or anyone else. Ignorance is bliss, and it seems to have served us quite well so far.
