Cleaning Up The Garbage Patch

A massive cleanup of plastic in the seas will begin in the Pacific Ocean, by way of Alameda, California. The Ocean Cleanup, an effort that's been five years in the making, plans to launch its beta cleanup system, a 600-meter (almost 2,000-foot) long floater that can collect about five tons of ocean plastic per month.

It's a start. The launch date is September 8, and the Great Pacific Garbage Patch being targeted is more than 1,000 nautical miles from the launch point and on the move.

Note that most funding for such things is coming from non-government sources. It would make more sense to me if we stopped wrecking countries around the Middle East for the benefit of Israel and diverted our wasteful military spending toward cleaning up the planet.

The Detroit Public School system has shut off drinking water at every one of the 106 school buildings it operates because of elevated levels of lead and copper found in water testing at 16 out of 24 schools.

The announcement is an admission that the catastrophic conditions in Flint, Michigan, caused by the profit-driven decision to shift the city’s water system to polluted water from the Flint River, are replicated for school children in Detroit, the largest city in Michigan and the poorest big city in America.

Take note that his "business" career was as an Internet service provider. To me that puts him in the same category as Zuckerberg, Sandberg, Bezos, and their ilk. Don't expect a lot of "real" jobs if this guy gets elected. I see nothing in his background which suggests true business acumen.

The current political turmoil in the US suggests that BIG changes are on the way. People better start thinking about what that means and about who will decide what changes will be made. Sure, it's cool to have been in a rock band ... but do we want rockers and stoners running our country? I don't.

Going All The Way In Syria

Speaking in Moscw after a visit with his Russian counterpart, Syrian FM Walid al-Muallem declared the Syrian military to be ready to “go all the way” in an offensive against rebel held Idlib, saying that the goal is to wipe out terrorist groups that persist in the deescalation zone in the area.

Email Treasure Trove ???

A Chinese company that claims to have hacked Hillary Clinton’s private server reportedly has a copy of every single email the former presidential candidate sent and received afterward. The Chinese state-owned company inserted a code that forwarded all Hillary’s emails to them, and Donald Trump is already demanding that this is investigated.

According to reporting done by The Daily Caller, the Chinese state-owned firm operating in the Washington D.C. area wrote code that was then embedded in Hillary’s private server and generated a “courtesy copy” for almost all her emails. Those were then forwarded to the Chinese company.

Do We Need A Social Wealth Fund ???

This essay supports the idea of a "social wealth fund" for the US:

I have two pertinent comments:
  1. If the so-called "Social Security Trust Fund" had been invested in the stock market, we already would have such a thing; but
  2. If we had done that, all its money would have been stolen by Wall Street instead of by Congress and the President.

A prerequisite for any such fund is the ability of the government to protect it from predators, and no government currently has such an ability.

Facebook Unlikely To Reform

Dozens of employees of the liberal and intolerant social media giant Facebook have decided to unite to challenge the left-wing political bias deeply ingrained in the company. Although the post went up quietly on Facebook’s internal message board last week, it quickly took off inside the social network’s inner sanctum.

Titled “We Have a Problem With Political Diversity,” the post took a shot at Facebook’s intolerant views of differing political opinions. “We are a political monoculture that’s intolerant of different views,” Brian Amerige, a senior Facebook engineer, wrote in the post, which was obtained by The New York Times. “We claim to welcome all perspectives, but are quick to attack - often in mobs - anyone who presents a view that appears to be in opposition to left-leaning ideology.”

As long as Zuckerberg and Sandberg are in charge, Facebook is unlikely to reform.

In addition to the apparent obstinacy at the top of the organization, Facebook is saddled with an almost insurmountable obstacle - people who are most likely to be FB employees are the very ones who seem to hate everything conservatives stand for, and who willingly form the "mobs" to which Amerige refers.

Don't agree with me? Show me your proof. And Amerige's letter proves nothing, other than the existence of "dozens of employees" who are willing to speak up ... at least for now. How long do you think it will take FB to get rid of them now that they have identified themselves?

"Trending" is not the same as "supporting", especially when your job is at stake. I have yet to encounter a modern US corporation which runs itself like a democracy. Most CEOs consider disloyalty to be a mortal sin.

The United States is currently waging economic warfare against one tenth of the world's countries with cumulative population of nearly 2 billion people and combined gross domestic product (GDP) of more than $15 trillion.

These include Russia, Iran, Venezuela, Cuba, Sudan, Zimbabwe, Myanmar, the Democratic Republic of Congo, North Korea and others on which Washington has imposed sanctions over the years, but also countries like China, Pakistan and Turkey which are not under full sanctions but rather targets of other punitive economic measures.

In addition, thousands of individuals from scores of countries are included in the Treasury Department's list of Specially Designated Nationals who are effectively blocked from the U.S.-dominated global financial system. Many of those designated are either part of or closely linked to their countries' leadership.

From a U.S. perspective, each one of the economic entities is targeted for a good reason be it human rights violations, terrorism, crime, nuclear trade, corruption or in the case of China, unfair trade practices and intellectual property theft.

But in recent months it seems that America's unwavering commitment to fight all of the world's scourges has brought all those governments and the wealthy individuals who support them to a critical mass, joining forces to create a parallel financial system which would be out of reach of America's long arm. Should they succeed, the impact on America's global posture would be transformational.

John McCain - RIP

Earlier this week some of us were eulogizing Uri Avnery. Today it's John McCain's turn. I don't think one could find two persons more opposite in their views of war and peace than them.

I think it fitting in John's case to recite Mark Twain's "war prayer" in his memory:

"Lord our Father, our young patriots, idols of our hearts, go forth into battle — be Thou near them! With them — in spirit — we also go forth from the sweet peace of our beloved firesides to smite the foe. Here Is What John Bolton Is Doing To Us

The long-running US and Russian proxy war in Syria has been largely forgotten of late, but suddenly snapped back into international headlines with John Bolton's warning Assad and Russia this week that Washington will respond with "greater military force" should claims of a Syrian government chemical attack emerge in Idlib.

In response, Russia subsequently warned of a staged "chemical provocation" coming and it appears a war of words is yet again ratcheting up over Syria, which has the very real potential of turning into an actual war.

It fits a familiar pattern on Syria since Russian intervention at the invitation of President Bashar al-Assad in 2015: just when it appears the jihadists are on the brink of final defeat, and as stability is returning after seven years of grinding war, something happens to bring things right back to the brink of global crisis and escalation.

And now, a senior Russian lawmaker in the Federal Assembly (Duma) has called on his government to draw its own "red lines" while suggesting the use of tactical nuclear weapons against United States forces in Syria.

Burning Man - Utopia Or Hell ???

I've never had the pleasure (?) of attending Burning Man, but apparently it's a big deal for some:

Refugee Crisis Is Just Getting Started

Arriving home from work last Friday in this sweltering Amazonian town along Venezuela’s border, a shopkeeper was beaten by a group of four men who tied him and his wife up before taking $5,600 he had stuffed in his pocket to buy supplies the next day.

The attack proved to be a tipping point for this impoverished town of 10,000 people, where - like across swaths of South America - sympathy is beginning to give way to resentment over the 2.3 million Venezuelans the U.N. estimates have fled to neighboring countries since 2014.

News of the assault prompted Pacaraima locals, who already had been planning a protest the next day, to set fire to a refugee camp and chase away Venezuelans with rocks. The army said at least 1,200 Venezuelans fled Brazil that day back to their homeland.

Considering the Bible in its entirety, I think it is fair to say that most people have no idea what "the Kingdom of G-d" will really be like. Considering what the scribes and Pharisees seem to have believed, I also think it would be difficult for most to distinguish between the Judeo-Christian concept of "the Kingdom of G-d" and what we now call "a fundamentalist Islamic state". Many who pray "Thy kingdom come" really don't know what they're asking for.

Seymour Hersh

I recently finished reading Seymour Hersh's memoir Reporter. It's a great rehash of the 60s and 70s, if you're interested in that era.

He mentioned a few things I had forgotten (or never knew):
  • Hersh was press secretary for Eugene McCarthy's presidential campaign;
  • Richard Nixon beat his wife Pat, on more than one occasion; and
  • Henry Kissinger was a liar, about nearly everything.

I puzzled over the fact that Hersh appears to have bought into the official stories of the JFK assassination and the 9/11 attacks. I thought this strange, since by his own admission he is a contrarian on most issues.

There is ample evidence that both official stories are fundamentally wrong:
  • the Altgens 6 photo shows Oswald standing in the doorway of the Texas School Book Depository as the presidential limo drives by; and
  • the disintegration of WTC1 and WTC2 clearly violate the laws of conservation of momentum and energy if the only energy involved comes from gravity and the two aircraft which struck the buildings, as the official story would have us believe.

These little known facts should have been available to a thorough investigator like Hersh, so if they were why did he ignore them? I can only surmise that since Hersh depends on others to publish his work, he cannot successfully write about things most people consider to be completely "loony".

That's my two cents worth.

Welcome To The Minority Report

Hundreds of retail stores and soon thousands are investigating using biometric facial recognition software FaceFirst to build a database of shoplifters to aid in the fight against theft, Peter Trepp CEO of FaceFirst told BuzzFeed News.

The software is called FaceFirst and is designed to scan faces as far as 50 to 100 feet away. As customers walk through a store entrance, the video camera captures repetitious images of each shopper and chooses the clearest one to store. The software then analyzes that image and compares it to a database of “bad customers” that the retailer has compiled; if there is a match, the software sends an alert to store employees that a “high risk” customer has entered the door.

Secret Meeting About 2018 Election

Representatives from a host of the biggest US tech companies, including Facebook and Twitter, have scheduled a private meeting for Friday to share their tactics in preparation for the 2018 midterm elections.

Last week, Facebook’s head of cybersecurity policy, Nathaniel Gleicher, invited employees from a dozen companies, including Google, Microsoft, and Snapchat, to gather at Twitter’s headquarters in downtown San Francisco, according to an email obtained by BuzzFeed News.

“As I’ve mentioned to several of you over the last few weeks, we have been looking to schedule a follow-on discussion to our industry conversation about information operations, election protection, and the work we are all doing to tackle these challenges,” Gleicher wrote.

A Senate Of Heartless Killers

Sen. Chris  Murphy’s (D-CT) amendment to withdraw all funding for the US involvement in the war in Yemen was blocked by Senate leadership on Wednesday, preventing it from getting a vote for inclusion in the 2019 Defense Appropriations Act.

There was language aiming to limit US involvement in Yemen in the 2019 NDAA, but President Trump’s signing statement indicated that he doesn’t intend to comply with that. This meant using control over the funding, through the appropriations act, was the next real chance to require compliance.

The Murphy Amendment said largely the same thing that the language in the NDAA said, except with the added threat of revoking funding. It seeks for the administration to certify that any US involvement complies with international law. President Trump objected to offering such a report to Congress.

By the way, I attended a St. Michael's Byzantine Catholic Church in Fairport Harbor, OH when I was a child. To the best of my knowledge, there was no molestation occurring there. In fact, the first priest I encountered there was married, back in the day when the Pope allowed such a thing for the Eastern Rite churches.

In the US there is a mantra called "the separation of church and state". It allegedly is based upon clauses in the US Constitution such as these:

Article VI, Para.3
... no religious Test shall ever be required as a Qualification to any Office or public Trust under the United States.

1st Amendment
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof ...

This "separation" was intended to protect us from religious persecution, but today it is used mainly to shield us from the very concept of G-d.

Even worse, the US Constitution does not separate America's one TRUE religion, business and commerce, from the state. In fact, the two are intertwined at a fundamental level, starting with the following provisions:

Article I, Section 8
The Congress shall have Power ...
3: To regulate Commerce ...
5: To coin Money, regulate the Value thereof, and of foreign Coin, and fix the Standard of Weights and Measures;
6: To provide for the Punishment of counterfeiting the Securities and current Coin of the United States;
7: To establish Post Offices and post Roads;
8: To promote the Progress of Science and useful Arts, by securing for limited Times to Authors and Inventors the exclusive Right to their respective Writings and Discoveries ...

In fact, one might argue that business and commerce (especially in the forms conducted by corporations) and the US government have become indistinguishable, and that sad fact indicates our form of government rightly should be called "fascism".

Whether or not you believe in the right to be free from religious interference in your life, I urge you to consider the importance of separating government from business and commerce. Failure to do so has put corporations like Amazon, Apple, Facebook, and Google more or less in control of our lives and our nation's future.

And their level of control is AT LEAST as great as the power of the Catholic Church at the height of the Inquisition, and it shows NO SIGN of waning. That cannot be a good thing.

Opening The Door To Europe

Under Bill Clinton, the former nation of Yugoslavia was destroyed.

Over the past several years, the nation of Greece also has been destroyed, although in a somewhat less violent fashion:

And now the US is in the process of crushing the nation of Turkey [the fate of the pastor is merely a pretext]:

Take a look at the map of Europe. All this nation-wrecking is opening the door for a modern invasion of Europe by the starving peoples of the Middle East.

I can think of several reasons why this is being done:
  • to remove the current population for the benefit of Greater Israel;
  • to soften Russia's southern flank; and
  • to punish and control Europe.

Whatever the case, things definitely are NOT looking good for the EU.

Sadly, nothing really has changed in the past 51 years, except that US merchants of death now have a global reach, supported by our so-called "diplomats":

Survival Of The Laziest

A new large-data study of fossil and extant bivalves and gastropods in the Atlantic Ocean suggests laziness might be a fruitful strategy for survival of individuals, species and even communities of species. The results have just been published in the Proceedings of the Royal Society B by a research team based at the University of Kansas.

Looking at a period of roughly 5 million years from the mid-Pliocene to the present, the researchers analyzed 299 species' metabolic rates - or, the amount of energy the organisms need to live their daily lives - and found higher metabolic rates were a reliable predictor of extinction likelihood.

"We wondered, 'Could you look at the probability of extinction of a species based on energy uptake by an organism?'" said Luke Strotz, postdoctoral researcher at KU's Biodiversity Institute and Natural History Museum and lead author of the paper. "We found a difference for mollusk species that have gone extinct over the past 5 million years and ones that are still around today. Those that have gone extinct tend to have higher metabolic rates than those that are still living. Those that have lower energy maintenance requirements seem more likely to survive than those organisms with higher metabolic rates."

I am not convinced that a lower metabolic rate equates to "laziness", but I'm fairly certain that I am living proof of what this study concludes.

The Price Of Lawlessness

The sad tale of Mollie Tibbetts is finally coming to an end:

In part, her tragic death is the result of lawlessness in many forms:
  • failure to control our borders;
  • failure to police our cities and towns;
  • failure to stop the flow of illegal drugs;
  • failure to get violence off our TVs and the Internet and out of our minds; and
  • many others.
