As I recall, we always cheered when people around the world toppled monuments of their former oppressors. I do NOT recall anyone anywhere toppling statues of any universally loved, democratically elected leaders.
Now statues are being toppled in the USA, and troops are being deployed to protect them:

We need to ask ourselves whether all these historical figures really were what we believed them to be. If they were not, then maybe the statues should come down.
If they do, what's going to replace them? Many are coming down, but what is going up? Where's the omelet?
