Do NOT Restart Nuke Testing

According to this report, Israel has been increasing its stockpile of nuclear weapons:

And as you may know, the US is considering a restart of underground testing of nuclear weapons:

Are the two issues related?

During the Clinton presidency, Secretary of Energy Hazel O'Leary declassified the following information:
  • MRR nuclear weapons (minimum residual radiation) had been developed AND tested; and
  • US and Israeli nukes had been tested simultaneously in the same shot holes on the Nevada Test Site.

That's right - the US directly helped Israel develop its nuclear arsenal.

Some (including me) argue that US policy toward Israel's nuclear program violates the NPT and our own arms export control regime. You can find some of the arguments here:

https://www.wrmea.org/2019-may/u.s.-foreign-aid-and-the-israeli-nuclear-weapons-program.html

Although that's water under the bridge, it would be nice if someone in Congress and the administration would grow a pair and start enforcing our treaties and laws, even the ones which impact Israel.

And at the VERY least, DO NOT allow Israel to piggyback any more nuclear testing on US soil ... or anywhere else for that matter. Such a thing does NOT enhance our security, and it helps lead to a situation in which Israel thinks it can get away with anything, including the use of nuclear weapons against its enemies, both real and imaged.

In no way would that be good for the world.

  1. If not for Israel and Saudi Arabia, would Iran even WANT nuclear weapons?
