Are We Taking AI Seriously Enough ???

According to Professor Stephen Hawking, the answer is "no":

One can imagine such technology outsmarting financial markets, out-inventing human researchers, out-manipulating human leaders, and developing weapons we cannot even understand. Whereas the short-term impact of AI depends on who controls it, the long-term impact depends on whether it can be controlled at all.

Anyone who thinks that we can control an intelligence that will be infinitely smarter than us is deluded. Yes, AI may do wonderful things, but the downside risk is incalculable. One way or another, it will make humans obsolete and unnecessary. Is that what we want?
