Abusive Cops vs. Abusive Priests

Here is a revealing report about police officers with checkered pasts (abusive?) who get reassigned, transferred, and/or hired by other departments:

Reading this reminded me of the situation with abusive priests who were allowed to remain priests and who were reassigned, transferred, and/or hired by other parishes instead of being removed from the priesthood after abusing members of their flock.

It's fair to say that both police and clergy are respected figures who receive their authority from earthly bureaucracies. When either of them abuse that authority, they should be disciplined and removed from their profession to prevent future abuse and NOT merely transferred.

Why is the public demanding the church be punished for tolerating and protecting abusive priests, but NOT demanding that police departments be sanctioned for tolerating and protecting abusive cops? Is it because we no longer respect the church but are afraid of the police? That would be my assessment.
