Is there a role for vigilantes?

A vigilante is an individual or group who undertakes law enforcement without legal authority and/or illegal authority. [from Wikipedia]

In Mexico, vigilantes have taken over a town following the apparent murder by police of one of their leaders:

I would call these brave men in Mexico "militia", not "vigilantes". They are doing what militia are designed to do when a government is corrupt. In a democracy the police work for the people, not the other way around.

It is interesting to note that our neighbors down south have the cojones to take action against their corrupt police and politicians, while we gringos up north are cowering in our homes wondering when OUR corrupt police, military, and politicians are going to take our guns away.

"Land of the free, home of the brave"? Don't make me laugh! Americans are good at slaughtering unarmed men, women, and children with high tech standoff weapons, but when it comes to real battles they slink away with their tails between their legs.
