I have always felt that Professor Alfred McCoy (author of
The Politics of Heroin) left many dots unconnected, perhaps due to a lack of
proof or because he didn't want to suffer the fate of Gary Webb (author of the
newspaper series "Dark Alliance"). I really don't know.
Whatever the case, the facts on the ground suggest that
America does not want to stop the drug trade. The powers that be merely want to
ensure that the right palms are greased, that their for-profit prisons are
full, and that certain undesirable populations are kept under control.
Of course there will be collateral damage, but when did the ruling class ever worry about that?
