I would add the following to any list of such declarations:
- The Articles of Secession from the Union, which preceded the US Civil War;
- The numerous popular rebellions which led to the abolition of colonialism;
- The UN's Universal Declaration of Human Rights; and
- The nearly universal movement to escape US hegemony now sweeping the world.
If people in the US really value "independence", why do we forbid it to the other nations of the world? Why do we allow corporations and our own government to take it away from us?
