According to the Hebrew Bible, things didn’t turn out well for the Canaanites. The Israelites arrived in their territory following their exodus from Egypt, toppled the walls of Jericho by blasting their horns and trumpets, and “utterly destroyed all that was in the city”. The ancient text suggests that widespread destruction of other Canaanite settlements followed. But the Canaanites weren’t annihilated – their DNA has now been found in the population of modern-day Lebanon.
