Here is a discussion of what we and others have been doing in the Middle East:
... why did empires of the past including the Mongol empire who invaded Iraq in 1258 [begin] the destruction of Iraq’s priceless artifacts? There were revolutionary movements throughout history who also chose to commit ‘Cultural genocide’ by destroying ancient artifacts, artworks, history books and even force the people to speak the invading empire’s language. By destroying a people’s culture you erase their history, language, art, everything that makes them who they are. Destroying a people’s culture allows the powers that be to shape the present according to their liking, and then the future belongs to them, not to the people who they conquered.

Yes they're talking about Iraq, but the exact same thing is being done to us here in the USA. The powers that be are rapidly destroying our culture and reshaping it according to their liking. And the Internet and social media are their revolutionary tools of choice.
I think this is an unstoppable trend. Once the Trump phenomenon has been erased (and at most it has four more years to play out), those of us born in the wake of World War II won't be able to recognize this place any more.
People here whine about what's now happening in China, but we are experiencing the equivalent of China's Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution of 1966-1976, although it has little to do with our rapidly diminishing working class. When it's over, we'll have the same kind of totalitarian social system being created over there.
