Something's Wrong With Israel

... despite rising antisemitism and economic uncertainty, the number of immigrants [to Israel] from various countries actually declined.

Take, for example, France, where many Jews are afraid to wear a yarmulke in public out of fear for their personal safety.

Nonetheless, whereas in 2015 a whopping 7,900 French Jews made aliyah, just 2,600 made the move in 2018. That is the lowest figure in more than five years.

British aliyah also saw a drop of 4%, with just 500 Jews moving to Israel from the UK last year amid fears that Labour Party chairman Jeremy Corbyn is antisemitic, as are many of his followers.

This trend is particularly worrisome given the mounting hostility to Jews across Europe, which one would have thought would have prompted an accelerating exodus.

Possible reasons for this include the following:
  • maybe they think Israel is no safer than their current homes;
  • maybe they don't experience any mounting hostility;
  • maybe they don't agree that Corbyn and his followers are antisemitic; or
  • maybe they agree with the Torah when it says Jews should not have a state until the messiah comes.

If, as this report suggests, immigration is the key to a healthy Israeli nation-state, we might expect the Israeli government to do something to encourage its growth. That something can come in two basic forms:
  1. make people think Israel is a better place; or
  2. make people scared to stay where they are.

Which do you think they will do?
