Well guess what - there are similar storage facilities in many parts of the US:
Years ago I lived in Illinois close to a natural gas storage well. One night it blew out and caught fire. The flames were so intense that my neighborhood was lit as brightly as midday, even though it was 3 AM and the well was over a mile away. These things can definitely be a hazard, and some of them store a lot of energy.
