We have achieved spiritual death

Here is an excellent essay by Dr. Gary Kohls about Martin Luther King, Jr.'s Beyond Vietnam speech:

When machines and computers, profit motives and property rights are considered more important than people, the giant triplets of racism, materialism and militarism are incapable of being conquered.

This year, Congress is passing a $1.1 trillion dollar budget made up primarily of military and security-related expenditures; and racism, materialism, and militarism are no closer to being conquered than they were when King uttered these words in 1967.

If we do not act we shall surely be dragged down the long, dark and shameful corridors of time reserved for those who possess power without compassion, might without morality and strength without sight.

When bankgangsters and criminal corporations are "too big to jail", but the homeless can be killed by police for jiggling the handles of car doors, a nation that routinely tolerates such abominations has achieved spiritual death.

But I would say that we even have gone beyond the achievement of spiritual death, and are approaching the triumph of an evil spirit ... the evil spirit which has always been in our background but which since 9/11 has charged out of the shadows like a roaring lion.

I have traveled the length and breadth of Alabama, Mississippi and all the other southern states. I have looked at her beautiful churches with their lofty spires pointing heavenward. I have beheld the impressive outlay of her massive religious education buildings. Over and over again I have found myself asking: ‘What kind of people worship here? Who is their God?

His name is Satan, and he has become the evil spirit who has enveloped America. He has many dark angels who assist him: George W. Bush, Dick Cheney, Donald Rumsfeld, Obama ad-Dajjal, Hillary the Harpy Clinton ... their name is Legion.

Whatever happens, do not take their mark no matter what they do to you:

And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.
Matthew 10:28 KJV
