America has been waging a "war on poverty" for 50 years. Its main accomplishments have been to assure that the poor will stay poor while the middle class has nowhere to go but down:

Once LBJ had murdered Martin Luther King, Jr., the poor lost their best champion. And when the murder of Robert Kennedy soon followed, it was game over.
