“A Republic, if you can keep it.”
-Benjamin Franklin (attributed)
The United States was formed as a republic, not as a democracy. What is the difference?
Definition of republic:
A government in which supreme power resides in a body of citizens entitled to vote and is exercised by elected officers and representatives responsible to them and governing according to law.
Definition of democracy:
A government by the people; especially: rule of the majority.
Prior to its amendment, the US Constitution allowed the sovereign States to chose who was entitled to vote. Many amendments have stripped away their power to do so. One thus could argue that we have moved in the direction of democracy.
However, the only votes which now matter are the votes of the rich and the politically connected. In this regard, we have moved in the direction of republic.
But realistically, in spite of Obama ad-Dajjal's frequent sham appeals to "the people", the United States is rapidly becoming a mafiocracy.
Characteristics of a mafiocracy:
- Several powerful organized criminal groups exercise full control over the national economy.
- The corrupt government and law enforcement agencies serve as tools for organized criminal groups; the formal country leaders are unable and unwilling to fight organized crime and corruption.
- Democratic institutions and mechanisms are absent or have failed, and the legal system is paralyzed.
- Market mechanisms are suppressed.
Sound familiar? It should. Bankgangsters and corporations have taken over the US economy and have destroyed our tax base. If the NSA's spying serves anyone's purposes, it serves the needs of this mafiocracy first and foremost.
