What do Whitey Bulger and Saddam Hussein have in common?

What do Whitey Bulger and Saddam Hussein have in common? They both thrived because they apparently did "wet work" for Uncle Sam.

Whitey, who is currently on trial in Boston for nineteen murders, was an FBI informant. The information he gave Uncle Sam led to the destruction of rival crime gangs, and in return Uncle Sam apparently looked the other way as Whitey eliminated many of his (and their) enemies:

Saddam, who was tried and hanged in 2006, was a long-time informant and ally of the United States. He killed millions of Iranians using weapons we sold him, and in return Uncle Sam apparently looked the other way as Saddam eliminated many of his (and our) enemies:

The other thing they have in common is this: like all of America's "allies" and "informants", both Whitey and Saddam eventually outlived their usefulness and themselves had to be eliminated. In both cases it took a while, but the "long arm of the law" (a.k.a. America's Murder Inc.) eventually caught up with them.

What kind of a government does business in secret with the devil and then when discovered says, "We only did it because we love you"?

You tell me, folks. You tell me.
