Living In Kafka-Land

In the land of the free, you must ask permission from government before you modify your own property. If you do not first ask for permission and pay them, you can face heavy fines and, or imprisonment. Two brothers in Michigan are learning this the hard way after they cut down trees on their own property. Now the state is telling them to pay up - a half million dollars.

Gary and Matt Percy have been told by their local rulers that because they failed to obtain the proper permit before cutting down 1,400 trees - on their own property - that they now owe $225-$450 per tree.

I would have thought this provision of the US Constitution would overrule such "fines":

5th Amendment
No person shall ... be deprived of ... property, without due process of law; nor shall private property be taken for public use, without just compensation.

But I guess it does not. Environmental protection laws are cleverly crafted to override both the constitution and even common sense.

No more freedom for you. The only real "freedom" left in the US belongs to corporations, who are free to spy on us and to trick us into giving up our valuable property (e.g., data) in return for meaningless gewgaws (e.g., "free" social media accounts).
