Why are US Marines conducting drills with Syrian "rebels", the majority of whom are terrorists?

Is the goal here to admit we actually DO negotiate with terrorists, even allying ourselves with them, or to make certain that American troops soon will be killed by Russians ... giving the US an excuse for massive retaliation?
If my son or daughter were in Syria, I would not want them to be Israel's cannon fodder. Would you?
