Closing Switzerland's Borders

According to this essay in Der Spiegel, Switzerland is cutting down on its immigration quotas:

What's wrong with that? Doesn't a sovereign nation have the right to control its borders and determine who can become one of its citizens?

My first wife had a Swiss aunt who lived in Lausanne. She (the aunt) told us in the 1970s that in her entire lifetime there had not been one murder in Switzerland and they had only turned down one request for political asylum (from Timothy Leary of LSD fame).

Although there are internal tensions between Swiss Germans, French, Italians, and Romansch, Switzerland is a relatively tolerant multicultural nation. They are peaceful and rich, and they want to keep it that way.

It's a shame we did not do likewise.
