Data mining v. gold mining

The phrase "data mining" is an apt analogy:

Every place in the world where "mining" takes place, the people suffer while the ruling class prospers.

George Armstrong Custer helped "miners" gouge yellow gold from the Black Hills. Treaties were ignored, and the Indians were exterminated. We face the same fate, and for the same reason: there's gold in them thar' servers, and the greedy are going to "mine" it no matter what we do or say.

The belief that the United States is a benevolent democracy is a dangerous delusion.
