The Cost Of Measles

The following is social commentary, and it is not to be construed as medical advice. I urge you to find a physician you trust, and to do what you think is right for you, your family, and your community.

Here is a question which illustrates how absurd our health care (sic) system has become:

"Would you rather spend $200 on a measles vaccine, or $10,000 in the case of a measles outbreak?"

I am a baby boomer who was subjected to both the Salk polio vaccine and the Sabin vaccine. Although several of my contemporaries came down with "childhood diseases" in those years, including measles, none died ... and their treatment did NOT cost $10,000 or anything even close.

4 million children are born in the US annually, which means that someone is making close to a billion dollars per year just from one vaccine. That's profit for them, while you and I (the parents) have to pay for the $10,000 per case of measles. Hardly seems fair, does it?

Now let's look at another cost assessment:

A recent study estimates the average cost for ABA therapy for a child diagnosed with autism is $60,000 per year from when he or she is diagnosed (typically at age 3) until entering school at age 6 or 7. The total cost for these four years of treatment: $240,000.

And that's just the beginning, since they won't miraculously recover when they enter school.

The prevalence of autism spectrum disorder has been rising, and all we get are statements that no one knows why ... but vaccines are perfectly safe.

What do you think? Isn't it about time we nail this down and do something other than just browbeat and threaten anti-vaxxers?

  1. By the way, how about those kids who are defying their parents and volunteering to get the vaccine anyway? Can they legally give "informed consent"? Do they realize the probability of getting ASD is far greater than the probability of coming down with measles?

  2. Now we can blame the Russians for measles, too:

WOW !!! Will this insanity never end?
