I think the authors of the above study kinda miss the point. One reason the US and Russia have such large arsenals is the "fear" that most of them would be lost in a first strike, making them unable to retaliate.
Keep in mind that Israel allegedly has over 100 nuclear warheads, so they alone could destroy civilization. And don't think for a second they wouldn't.
And that is the REAL danger of nuclear weapons ... not just that anyone would be crazy enough to use them, but that someone also would then strike back in revenge.
