Puerto Rico's non-voting member of the US House of Representatives says the territory's problems could be solved by statehood:

The main problem is they are broke and cannot repay their debts. This cannot be solved by "equality". What Rep. Pierluisi is asking for is a financial bailout.
Bailouts are what is wrecking the US. We bailed out the "too big to fail" banks, we bailed out Europe's banks, we bailed out the Israelis, we bailed out Ukraine - in short we bailed out just about everyone except We The People of the United States.
Q: What good would it do us to throw good money after bad?
A: From my perspective Puerto Rico needs independence, not statehood. I say let them go.
And what do you know - back in 1977 Foreign Affairs magazine agreed:

We screwed up. We should have let them go back then.
