Our attention deficit democracy

The current budget crisis stems in part from the Budget Control Act of 2011. When the Joint Select Committee failed to provide legislation to reduce the budget deficit as required by the act, automatic budget cuts went into effect (the "sequestration"):

Clearly, neither of the major political parties, neither house of Congress, and no one in the administration of Obama ad-Dajjal took the budget cutting process seriously, and the President by his actions openly mocked the sequestration.

Now we have a situation in which the House of Representatives, in the spirit of Budget Control Act of 2011, wants to take concrete action to reduce the budget deficit and only reauthorize spending that we really need. In response, our jackass President is holding his breath, is stamping his feet, and along with Robert Reich is calling the Republicans "extortionists".

Really? Can any of the Democrats be taken seriously?

I ask you, if your child was addicted to drugs and that drug addiction was threatening their well being, and if you told your child "either stop taking drugs or I will cut off your allowance" ... would that be "extortion", or a step in the right direction?

By the way, I borrowed the phrase "attention deficit democracy" from the title of a book by James Bovard. You can read a great essay of his on Lew Rockwell's website:
