It appears that both Google and Yahoo have been invaded by NSA snoops:

I find it difficult to believe that either company did NOT know this was going on. Yahoo is now a Google clone, and regardless of what company executives say I would not trust either of them. They make money by selling YOUR data.
The real question that should be asked is "did either Google or Yahoo receive compensation for the data which NSA 'took' from them?" If the answer is "yes", then they are no better than the government snoops.
By the way, the government's desire to invade your privacy in this manner predates 9/11. I can recall that Janet Reno was a strong supporter of this kind of stuff. When Democrats say they support the people, they are lying.
