Social Media And Winston Smith

If you recall, in George Orwell's novel Nineteen Eighty-Four, the main character Winston Smith was employed in a government office which tossed unwanted information down the "memory hole" to make it disappear. It now seems that social media serves that very purpose:

I have always felt Big Brother was the embodiment of what We the People have become, and the state of today's social media appears to confirm that belief.
