UFO Photos From Sub A Hoax ???

According to this report, photos of a UFO were taken from USS Trepang (SSN 674) in 1971:

Here is my two cents as a former submarine officer:

• Subs travel underwater, so any photos would have to be taken through the periscope,
• Typically, only the officer of the deck or the captain has access to the periscope, and
• Photos taken using the periscope are classified and access to them is highly restricted.

So who took these photos and how did they get off the ship?

In addition, periscopes have prominent bearing and range markers in their field of view. Had I been taking such photos, these markers would have been visible in most or all of them to assist in estimating the size and location of the object. But, you will note, such markers are not shown.

My sub and Trepang had the same home port for several years following this alleged event, and I never heard anything about these photos or this incident through the grapevine.

I'm highly skeptical of the whole thing.
