This spy mess originated with the generation which read Orwell's Nineteen Eighty-Four in school. Along with Animal Farm, it must have stuck with them because they seem to have been faithfully introducing the events of both novels into our world. Many of them also read Ayn Rand's novels while in college, which may explain why they believe that selfishness is a virtue.
