Jesus did say His followers would be hated and persecuted, and it looks like He was right.
Personally, I believe Christianity lost its way in America when it became a business. And it didn't help when the priests, ministers, and pastors were seen to lack the courage to stand up for what their churches had been preaching for 2000 years. Nothing destroys a movement faster than "leaders" who are cowards no longer willing to take up the cross.
