J.K. Rowling Just Doesn't Get It

Rowling and others have signed a letter complaining about "cancel culture". You can read about it here:

This particular train of thought in the letter is revealing:

"The free exchange of information and ideas, the lifeblood of a liberal society, is daily becoming more constricted. While we have come to expect this on the radical right ..."

So, the right is closed-minded (i.e., evil) but the left is not? At least some of the commenters picked up on this:

"I see only a collection of spineless liberals who never spoke out when cancel culture came for conservatives but now express concern when it’s affecting the intelligentsia."

It all kinda reminds me of this oft-quoted observation by Martin Niemöller:

First they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out - because I was not a socialist.

Then they came for the trade unionists, and I did not speak out - because I was not a trade unionist.

Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out - because I was not a Jew.

Then they came for me - and there was no one left to speak for me.

There are a few things going on here which need to be highlighted:

• What we're facing is very much like what happened in the 1930s Nazi Germany to which Niemöller refers.
• Make no mistake - "they" are coming for everyone, so don't think none of this applies to you.
• Merely speaking out will make little difference in this atmosphere of absolute intolerance.

Do you want to end this? If so, ask yourself what could have been done to stop Hitler and his ilk before they gained absolute control of Germany. Anything less than that just won't cut it.

If we cannot stop what's now happening in the USA, we're going to suffer the same fate the Germans did. Yes, it CAN happen here ... and it IS happening.

If this is the best our "intelligentsia" can do, we don't have much of a future. And sadly, this too is almost exactly what happened in 1930s Germany.
