According to this report, three new US subs have problems with steam piping:

It's very disconcerting to hear of such unauthorized and undocumented weld repairs. If one of these elbows were to crack and/or rupture under pressure, the results would be catastrophic (as in turning the crew into lobsters).
I used to imagine how I would determine whether our sub had suffered a major steam leak or a major seawater break, since some of the initial symptoms would be the same. I am VERY happy that I never had to make that choice for real.
