Muhammad Ali Had It Right All Along

For Black Americans, military service has always been a way to show loyalty to the United States, while hoping to simultaneously gain societal equity. However, the tradition of Black soldiers returning home to be killed by police and disrespected by racism raises questions regarding whether military service is worth risking one's life.

Do you recall what Muhammad Ali said when he refused to be drafted?

"My conscience won't let me go shoot my brother, or some darker people, or some poor hungry people in the mud for big powerful America. And shoot them for what? They never called me nigger, they never lynched me, they didn't put no dogs on me, they didn't rob me of my nationality, rape and kill my mother and father. Shoot them for what? How can I shoot them poor people? Just take me to jail."

Too few people have ever had this level of courage ... far too few.
