Although there is a lot of "wealth" on the floor of our oceans, would it be a good idea to mine it? This analysis says NO:

Most activities which "generate wealth" are destructive to someone. Mining the oceans is truly a death wish; we depend on them for the very existence of life on earth.
But I don't think the corporations really give a damn. And the super rich think they'll all be escaping to Mars some day soon, so they don't give a damn either.
And what's the first thing they plan on doing when they get to Mars or back to the Moon: STRIP MINE IT !!!
And then those two orbs will become uninhabitable, too.
