According to an active duty US Army training company commander I know, today's military recruits are physical and mental wrecks. One of their chief problems is that their bodies are frail and subject to disabling injuries such as femoral stress fractures:

As far as I know, such a thing was unheard of in the Army when I served during the Vietnam War era.
Our kids may be formed to the same generic pattern from which their grandparents came, but the material they take up to fill out that pattern is no longer the same. They're weak and often too frail to be effective on the battlefield. They have spent too much time sitting on their asses playing with their iPods and video games and not enough time playing dodge ball.
I'll bet the Taliban don't have this problem.
Update: According to this report, 71% of potential recruits would not qualify for military service. Bummer !!!
