Should We Cure Death ???

Perhaps it would be appropriate this Easter to think about whether humanity should defy or "cure" death. Here are two recent reports about efforts to do so:

Two things should be obvious about this:

  • At first only the very rich will be able to afford to do it, and
  • If at some point all humans start living forever, it will create a real mess.

In support of this second point, I remind you of the following Star Trek episode:

And allow me also to remind you of something else which is not at all obvious - unauthorized immortality will be the final sin:

And the Lord God said, Behold, the man is become as one of us, to know good and evil: and now, lest he put forth his hand, and take also of the tree of life, and eat, and live for ever:

Therefore the Lord God sent him forth from the garden of Eden, to till the ground from whence he was taken.
So he drove out the man; and he placed at the east of the garden of Eden Cherubims, and a flaming sword which turned every way, to keep the way of the tree of life.
Genesis 3:22-24 KJV

When we were driven from the Garden of Eden, it was not as a punishment. It was a preventive measure which temporarily saved us from the wrath of G-d.

There are two trees in the Garden of Eden: the Tree of Life, and the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil. We chose the second, and just as God warned that choice resulted in our death. We can in fact get back to the garden, but doing so must be through God’s grace and the blood of our Lord Jesus Christ. Any other method we attempt to access the Tree of Life will result in our destruction.

For the final sin will be challenging G-d through attempting to become like Him by living forever. Those who seek to greatly extend the human lifespan through medical science or by combining humans with machines are on the verge of committing this sin. Should they succeed, it is unlikely their sin will go unpunished, since it represents a direct threat to the divinity of our Creator.

There can be only one G-d. And frankly I know I'm better off with the one we have than I would be with the charlatan demigods now being created in Silicon Valley.
