During World War I the US government lied about the "Spanish flu" in ways somewhat similar to what they now are doing with Ebola virus disease (EVD), and with disastrous results.

As far as we know, the US has only experienced a few cases of EVD. Let's pray it stays that way, because we are not prepared to cope with a true pandemic, and our government is not capable of telling us the truth about anything.
By the way, they withheld negative information about vaccines before too, when the first defective batches of the Salk vaccine gave polio to American children:
