While the world is busy condemning Trump for his immigration "bigotry", the EU is considering measures not unlike what he is proposing:
Chancellor Angela Merkel's plan to find a resolution to the refugee crisis with the help of Turkey is encountering significant resistance. Berlin and Brussels are already considering alternatives, but it could mean the end of border-free travel in large parts of Europe.

Wake up, people. A state of war exists, whether we like it or not. Why NOT control our borders? That is one of the prime functions of a nation state:
In 1918 the German sociologist Max Weber defined the modern state as “a human community that successfully claims the monopoly of the legitimate use of physical force within a given territory”. [from my novella, No More Patriots]
Failure to have a fixed, controlled border is a sign of a failed state, or no state at all. Do you really want the US to degenerate into a market state?
