It reminds me of the 2005 War of the Worlds movie starring Tom Cruise, in which aliens rode bolts of lightning down into the ground.
But on a deeper level, it could be something else:
And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him.

Don't expect the powers that be to tell you the truth about heavenly events. Why would they, seeing as how most of them are Satan's minions? Aren't they the ones who are telling us right is wrong and wrong is right?
