Wooden Men In Iron Ships

The US Navy just suffered a catastrophic fire in one of their ships:

I served on two older ships, and we also had fires. Not as bad as this recent one, but potentially lethal.

The thing not being asked is what would happen if such fires happened in combat. If some of our ships catch fire for no particular reason in "peacetime", wouldn't they become death traps if they came under enemy fire?

My heart goes out to all sailors who battle fires, floods, and toxic fumes. From personal experience, I know it ain't no fun.
