Once again, one has to ask ... why are things different now? You'd think that 63 years of scientific and medical progress would have put us in a better position than we were back then.
Today's "panic" and "lockdowns" seem to be enabled by the Internet and the rise of the Technocrats. Maybe we should have listened to EVERYTHING Ike warned us about in his farewell address:
The prospect of domination of the nation's scholars by Federal employment, project allocations, and the power of money is ever present and is gravely to be regarded.
Yet, in holding scientific research and discovery in respect, as we should, we must also be alert to the equal and opposite danger that public policy could itself become the captive of a scientific-technological elite.
I'm pretty sure the capture process he spoke of is well underway.
