What Jack Ma Tells Us About The USA

Here is a lengthy discussion about what China appears to be doing to its richest citizen, Jack Ma:

For the sake of argument, let's compare Ma to America's richest person - Jeff Bezos.

Both men are selling goods and services. Lots of those goods are made in China. So Ma's sales arguably generate more manufacturing jobs than Amazon's do. And they are mostly jobs for Chinese citizens.

According to the TIME essay, China is reining in Mr. Ma. He even seems to have been "disappeared", at least for a time. The US government is doing no such thing to Mr. Bezos. In fact, it appears to be a willing enabler of his ravenous gobbling up of the US retail market.

Aren't governments supposed to regulate corporations and protect workers and consumers? That's what the Chinese Communist Party and Chinese government are doing to Ma, while the US government seems unwilling to play ANY role in the regulation of Amazon (other than the role of a seemingly helpless bystander).

China has a production-based economy and appears to be concerned mainly about the welfare of its citizens. The USA has a rent and consumption-based economy and appears to be concerned mainly about the welfare of its banks and corporations.

The only thing standing in the way of China's rise to global dominance is the dying empire of the USA. In my view, we're not much of an obstacle. And I think that's probably China's view, too.
