The US Navy apparently wants to squander our money by producing autonomous killer submarines:

As a former nuclear sub officer, I have the following comments about this plan:
1. Who the hell is the enemy at which such weapons will be aimed? Neither the Chinese nor the Russians have shown ANY tendency to attack anything belonging to us. They have only been responding to OUR attacks on things which realistically belong to them.
2. It's pretty difficult to achieve reliable communications with an underwater vehicle. These things literally will be autonomous, and how do we know they'll only attack "the enemy"? I would hate to be on the receiving end of such a weapons platform gone amok ... or perhaps even hacked.
3. Such gizmos cost a LOT of money, and we'd be MUCH better served by expenditures on public health and other social safety nets. We the People CANNOT afford the luxury of a national security state any longer.
