This no doubt reflects how information has replaced physical merchandise in our so-called economy.
I would argue that the chief users of information at this level are bankgangsters, corporations, and their collaborators in the one percent. Therefore this trend which sees brick and mortar stores replaced by computer servers means that the rest of us are chiefly consumers without income. Once our credit is maxed out, we then slip into the category of useless eaters.
Who or what can possibly change this trend?
