Here is a revealing report by Jim Kirwan:
Where are all the other American floating systems of global-intimidation? Just a few years back multiple Aircraft Carriers and U.S. Battle Groups were all over the Persian Gulf threatening to shut down everything and to attack Iran relentlessly. But as soon as Russia took over the defense of Crimea, the physical presence of American Aircraft Carriers began to become scarce in and around most of the disputed regions involving Russia. And as the world is now learning about the effectiveness of Russia's heavy weapons, both at sea and in the air: The US Aircraft Carriers seem to be staying completely out-of-the-way of any area where Russian forces might be actively deployed.
Why is that?

There are two kinds of ships - submarines and targets. Aircraft carriers are the biggest targets of all.
In a former life, I was a US nuclear submarine officer. I've written about the vulnerability of aircraft carriers before:

The US has used its air power (including naval aircraft) to bully and butcher people around the world who have no air assets. It's been like shooting fish in a barrel.
But if we ever go to war with a real modern military power (e.g., Russia or China), it's going to be a different story. We should expect our foe to aggressively go after our aircraft carriers, and some of them are going to be sunk.
