Afghanistan said on Wednesday it was investigating reports of the death of Mullah Omar, leader of the Taliban movement behind an escalating insurgency against the government in Kabul.
The announcement came a day or so before a second round of peace talks had been tentatively scheduled, and uncertainty over the fate of the elusive Omar could deepen Taliban divisions over whether to pursue negotiations and who should replace him.
Omar, who would be in his mid-50s, has not been seen in public since fleeing when the Taliban was toppled from power by a U.S.-led coalition in 2001, and there has been speculation for years among militant circles that he was either incapacitated or had died.

I have written about Mullah Omar before, in this post which is well worth rereading:

And I said the following about his eventual death in my novella No More Patriots:
Crazy Horse and Sitting Bull were killed in cowardly fashion during separate scuffles while being taken into custody. Both were unarmed at the time of their deaths. Osama bin Laden was murdered during a nighttime raid on his home by US Special Forces, and his body was allegedly ignominiously dumped in the ocean. The available evidence suggests that he was unarmed at the time of his death and that the only shots fired that night were from US forces. I have no doubt that Mullah Omar will someday meet a similar fate. Anyone who beats the United States in even a single action, fairly or otherwise, can expect to be murdered in return.

Update: I guess he really is dead:

How did he die? Natural causes? Disease? Lead poisoning (a.k.a. gunshot)?
