Apparently the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) and the Social Security Administration (SSA) cannot agree on the basic metrics of the program:

If you think the US government is going to fix our many problems (including the SS shortfall), you are far more optimistic than I.
Here's what I think is going on: our "leaders" have bigger fish to fry. Consider this recent statement by a Putin adviser:
One person close to Mr Putin said the Yukos ruling was insignificant in light of the bigger geopolitical stand-off over Ukraine.
“There is a war coming in Europe,” he said. “Do you really think this matters?”
