This report describes how an Israeli team created synthetic human embryos and grew them in a lab:
Take note they call them "structures", possibly to avoid the stigma of conducting illegal or unethical human experimentation.
Perhaps they're trying to create something similar to a "golem":
A golem is a creature formed out of a lifeless substance such as dust or earth that is brought to life by ritual incantations and sequences of Hebrew letters. The golem, brought into being by a human creator, becomes a helper, a companion, or a rescuer of an imperiled Jewish community. In many golem stories, the creature runs amok and the golem itself becomes a threat to its creator.

Whatever the case, it's one thing to call yourself "G-d's chosen people", but quite another to play at being G-d. The whole thing seems pretty creepy to me.
