The Republican establishment doesn't want him as a Presidential candidate. A former Democrat, he admires a Democratic president Republicans love to hate. He has a penchant for making controversial statements. He does what he wants and doesn't play be the established political rules. Yet every time the mainstream media tolls the death knell for his candidacy, his poll numbers grow stronger and supporters become even more determined to get him the GOP nomination.
Of course, this all describes current Republican Presidential candidate Donald Trump. But those statements also describe Ronald Reagan in his first three runs for the Presidency in 1968, 1976, and 1980.

Years ago I met the wife of a senior executive for one of the three major TV networks (ABC, CBS, NBC). She told me her husband had revealed that Ronald Reagan was a Communist and that the networks had assisted in creating his legend as a great fighter of Communism to assist his political career.
From my perspective, the powers that be don't give a damn about ideology. All they wanted back then (and still do) was to own everything, and Reagan helped them achieve their goal. That was all that mattered.
I don't think Trump is that much of a phony, but I certainly hope he doesn't imitate Ross Perot (run and then quit) or Obama (tell us nothing but lies) as his campaign unfolds.
