Are separatist movements an indication that nation states are breaking down?

I don't see it that way.

The so-called "Great Powers" have prevented self-determination for a long time, but they have not yet been able to eradicate the desire for self-determination.

Let people do what they want, and we'll all be a lot happier.

And stop stealing their wealth.
